From the Star:
The students that will receive the eReaders will be allowed to go home with them. However, before using them, they are required to sign a pledge form that they will not only take care of the devices but also read as many books for their benefit, and that of their parents and community.
Their parents and guardians also make a similar pledge, give their children the consent to take part in the Worldreader project and allow Worldreader to use information gained from the project to make improvements to the product and to get more books that will help their children’s education. “The eReader belongs to the family and community, but the child is the custodian,” says Amolo.
On the issues of online security, Amolo insists that the devices already come with the books so the students will not need to connect to the internet to download them.
This, together with the fact that social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have been disabled reduces the exposure of the students to illegal websites and cyber crimes.
She added that the absence of such features reduces the temptation of stealing the devices by members of the public. Additionally, the school has received promise of tight security from the local police officers, as per the deputy officer in charge of Lang’ata, Inspector Dennis Onguko.
“We will increase the patrol around school to ensure that the students and devices are safe and that the students will not be ambushed on the way home,” he said, adding that the community should enhance their own security and protect their children as they carry and use the devices to enhance their education. Before receiving these eReaders, the students and their teachers undergo training.
