No Match Corps available here. Sixth graders tutoring 1st graders. Every day for 40 minutes, in math.
Reminds of a tutorial network program in Mexico called tutorias. Got to visit many of the schools, and the work is very interesting! Although a very different approach to curriculum development, utilizes a local network of students that develop their own units and teach to others.

Have you tried more near-peer — 6th graders tutoring 5th graders — to reinforce more recently learned concepts / see if 6th graders seem to get more out of it?
